An FHWA EDC-5 Webinar in collaboration with NLTAPA and the National Center for Rural Road Safety

September 15, 2020
11:00 AM - 1:00 PM (MT)

Rural roadway departures make up a third of U.S. traffic fatalities—about 30 people a day. The Every Day Counts round five (EDC-5) initiative, Focus on Reducing Rural Roadway Departures (FoRRRwD), features four pillars: Addressing All Public Roads, Systemic Approach, Safety Action Plans, and Proven Countermeasures. This webinar focuses on the Proven Countermeasures pillar.

State, local, and tribal agencies – come discover how low cost and maintenance treatments can provide significant benefits to reducing rural roadway departure crashes.

This webinar is FREE and open to anyone who is interested.

SPEAKERS and TOPICS to be covered include:
  • Destain Gingell, Lapeer County (Michigan) Road Commission, will discuss a proactive tree removal and trimming program that was established exclusively for enhancing roadside safety.
  • Kevin Kuther, Idaho Local Highway Technical Assistance Council (LHTAC), will discuss how local agencies in Idaho worked together to procure a pavement marking machine – reducing costs and completing more miles of restriping to keep drivers on the road.
  • Tom Honich, Missouri DOT, will discuss MoDOT’s systemic pavement marking program, evaluation studies demonstrating their effectiveness, and challenges and considerations for establishing a pavement marking program.
  • John Michael Walker, Alabama DOT and Rod Turochy, Alabama LTAP, will present on Alabama’s Horizontal Curve Signing Program, curve signing evaluation, and working with locals to evaluate curves for signing updates.
