Safety Countermeasures: Gravel Road Treatments, Rumble Strips, Safety Edge, Centerline Buffers

10/20/2020 - 10/20/2020
11:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Location: FHWA Rural Road Safety Webinar

Rural roadway departures make up a third of U.S. traffic fatalities - about 30 people a day. The Every Day Counts round five (EDC-5) initiative, Focus on Reducing Rural Roadway Departures (FoRRRwD), features four pillars:

  1. Addressing All Public Roads,
  2. Systemic Approach,
  3. Safety Action Plans, and
  4. Proven Countermeasures.

This webinar focuses on the Proven Countermeasures pillar. State, local, and tribal agencies - come discover what countermeasures can be used to minimize the potential for head-on crashes and options for treatments on unpaved roads

Speakers and Topics:

  • David Veneziano, Iowa LTAP, will discuss low-cost safety strategies and countermeasures used to reduce roadway departure crashes on unpaved and gravel roads.
  • Derek Leuer, MnDOT, will share Minnesota’s experience with SafetyEdge and rumble strips, how they can be combined to reduce roadway departure crashes, and working with County’s and local agencies to increase implementation of the countermeasures.
  • John R. Speed, PE, TxDOT Odessa District Engineer, will provide an overview of their experiences with adding centerline buffers on undivided rural highways; and
  • Srinivas Reddy Geedipally PhD, PE, Texas A&M Transportation Institute, will discuss preliminary results from their study of the safety effectiveness of centerline buffers.
