Program Topics:

Surveying - determining relative positions of objects or points. These points may be highways bridges, culverts, or drainage inlets. Horizontal positions are calculated from distances and directions, and vertical positions from differences in elevations. Accuracy is important. The class will cover:

     Basic Surveying Terminology:

    •       The Surveying Process
    •       Basic Types of Surveying
    •       Types of Survey Equipment – Tapes, Levels, Total Stations, and GPS
    •       What is meant by “Survey Control”
    •       What is horizontal alignment and stationing
    •       How to specify slope and calculate grades along a gradeline
      •  Elevations and Leveling

      •       Defining Elevation, Vertical Datums, Benchmarks, and TBM’s
      •       Methods of determining elevations – Differential Leveling
      •       Basic use of a level and how to read a rod
      •       Performing basic leveling calculations
      •       Field notetaking for leveling, page check, error of closure, and adjustments
      •       Shooting grades for pipe and ditch inverts
      •       Potential errors associated with leveling
        •  Field Practice – Performing a “Peg Test” on a Level

          •       Practice setting up level and reading the rod
          •       Proper level instrument care
          •       Problems encountered with levels and rods
          •       How do I know if my level is working correctly?
          •       Perform a “Peg Test in the Field
            •  Field Practice – Perform Leveling Associated with Drainage Systems

              •       Review and correct misunderstandings in setting up level and reading the rod
              •       Using or Establishing a BM or TBM
              •       Determining design grades from a set of plans
              •       Determining the field elevation of existing drainage elements
              •       Calculating the grades along a proposed ditch and setting grade stakes
              •       Calculating invert grades along sections of a drainage pipe and setting grade stakes
              •       Setting grade stakes for a proposed catch basin/drain inlet – Rim, inlet & outlet inverts
                • The class is intended for town, village, county and city highway officials, street foremen, construction supervisors, and others. The training provides employees with the knowledge of how to bank a curve, crown a road, check a grade, take elevations on each end of a culvert, and how to determine pipe length.

                  Roads Scholar I

                  This course is an elective in the Roads Scholar I course track.


                  Registration Fee

                  The registration fee for this class is $50 per person for employees of government agencies and $75 per person for non-government agencies. Fee includes class handout and lunch. Invoices will be sent upon receipt of registration form. Invoices can be paid by cash, check, money order, or credit card.

                  Please be considerate of those on the waiting list, cancel early if necessary. A full refund will be made if you cancel no later than 3 business days prior to the training day; otherwise, you will forfeit the registration fee.

                  Instructors

                  Messier, Peter

                  Peter has 40 years of professional level experience in performing and managing a wide range of surveying and civil engineering projects.  During his career he has also taught surveying and civil engineering courses, either full or part-time at several institutions, most recently at Clemson University.  He provides specialized survey training including the use of levels, total stations and RTK-GPS equipment and the use of Carlson SurvCE field software for construction personnel of the SCDOT.  Peter also provides construction surveying training to various county and municipal road and bridge departments.

                   

                  Peter holds a Master of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from Purdue University majoring in the Survey Engineering Graduate Program, and he is a Professional Land Surveyor in the States of Tennessee, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Maine, and is a Professional Engineer in the State of Tennessee.
